The building shown in the circa 1889 photo once stood at Huntington Avenue and Blagden Street where Trinity Place stands today. Trinity Place was completed in 2000 and designed by the architectural firm of Childs Bertman Tseckares Inc.
The Boston Public Library was under construction next door. Here's another photo showing the edge of that work.
In addition to the street cars running through Copley Square, there were rail lines ending in this area.
