If you explore the Boston Public Library's Collection of trade cards, you find that dogs were often used to sell soap. (And, a lot of other things.)
This Buchan's Carbolic Disinfecting Soap ad touted the brand as, "THE BEST DOG SOAP IN THE WORLD." (Here's a link to this image.)
