Just before this fountain on the Greenway's North End Park was turned off for the season, I took this photo for the North End Regional Review.
While researching the park and the area for a photo caption, I learned what inspired this water feature on the Greenway's site. "A shallow water 'canal' runs the length with vertical water jets adding sparkle and movement. This fountain harkens back to a century ago when a canal connected the harbor to important industrial operations."
I confirmed this information over at Historic Map Works with their 1722 Captain John Bonner map of Boston. If you use the option to "Overlay this Map- Historic Earth" you can scale back the opacity (slider is over on the right) and see the historic map over the current Google map. You'll see the "Mill Creek," running across the water in this photo, connecting the Mill Pond with Boston Harbor.
Do you know someone (besides Penny) who is fascinated with Boston History? Here are some potential gifts for the local history lover.
