I’m not sure which study concluded that, “we eat with our eyes first,” but it was certainly true when we sat down for lunch last week at the Dosa Factory in Central Square. Penny and I had been getting some background for a story about the Cambridge Farmers’ Market, and needed a break from the sun.
The market’s in a parking lot, just off Mass Ave in the back of Shalimar Foods & Spices. (Yes, you can enter through the market from Mass Ave.) It’s also where you’ll find the entrance to the Dosa Factory. We walked into a cafeteria-style restaurant, placed our order, took a seat, and awaited table-side delivery.
The Dosa is Indian street food that’s hard to ignore. It’s like an extra guest at the table, and we had two (I moved my chair to make room). Penny’s Masala Dosa, a crispy crepe made of rice flour rolled and stuffed with potato and curry leaf spiced onions, was $7.95. My Chicken Tikka Dosa, a “north Indian classic” was $8.95– both served with “sambhar (curry leaf spiced lentils) and coconut chutney.”
Lunch for two, with a shared cold drink, came in at just under $20. We’ll return to try some of their many other Indian entrees, including breads and desserts, and of course at least one more Dosa.
