Boston is a mess! Trash trapped in snowbanks was freed by last week's big melt. The wind over the past few days has scattered it everywhere. Are you willing to follow the great example of former governor and presidential candidate Michael Dukakis?
Governor Dukakis is well known for his committment to making the place where he lives better– even if that means picking up litter on the way to work each day. Here is a great piece from David Abel describing what has come to be known as the "Duke Walk."
Every morning, we have to bend down to pick up after our dog, so we grab the litter we can reach along the way. Yesteday, we picked up at least a shopping bag full of trash on one block of Commonwealth Avenue.
Our condo association pays for a porter to keep the sidewalk around our building clean. If your building doesn't provide that service, how about taking on the job for awhile?
Just grab a bag on your way out of the house and fill it as you go along. Wear a glove and you'll be able to pick up and stay clean. We'll help out along our walking path.
And, here's a message for that tiny minority of people with dogs who don't pick up when no one is around to see them. You may get a very chilly reception when the dog groups gather in spring. People can see you from their windows, and they spread the word about the slackers. Those who don't pick up are few and far between, but we are all blamed for your mess. And, we're tired of picking up after you.
If you'd like a tool for your "Duke Walk," we suggest a pair of inexpensive, long-handled tongs. Thanks to park volunteer Ann Swanson for sharing this tip with us. Amazon has pick up sticks in many styles, if you get serious about this activity.
