The 99¢ we paid for
“Catch the Bus” may be the best investment we’ve made in years. Even if
you only use buses occasionally, wouldn’t it be great to know when the
next bus will REALLY be at the stop nearest you? With Catch the Bus, we
know!
Yesterday we were busing it from the Back Bay to visit friends in Watertown. We quickly moved to make our connection in Central Square because we knew the #70 bus was just minutes away.
Later in the evening, we were sipping wine when we checked and saw that we had a choice of catching a bus home in 12 minutes or 32 minutes. Since we were already past our pup’s normal suppertime, we hustled out and grabbed that first bus.
This application from Thickfuzz uses the GPS on the buses to give you precise and ever-changing updates on the next bus due at your stop. Earlier in the summer we decided to walk home from Harvard Square and grab a bus if we became tired.
We pulled up “Catch the Bus” and saw that there was a bus due in about 17 minutes. The map screen also showed us where we were in relation to the next bus stop.
As we walked and rechecked, that bus’s time of arrival went up to 23 minutes and then 30 minutes. No bus had passed us so we kept walking. We guessed that a bus must have been taken out of service.
Without this wonderful app, we could have spent a long time standing at a bus stop waiting for a bus that wasn’t coming. Instead, we had a great exercise session and didn’t waste an hour of our day.
Catch the Bus only works in Boston and San Francisco. It’s available for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices.
