There is one day all year when you can have a picnic at the Arnold Arboretum. Sunday, May 9, 2010 is Lilac Sunday, and Harvard University invites you to, "Gather at the Arboretum to picnic (allowed on this special day only!), watch dance performances, tour the lilac collection, and more. Event takes place rain or shine. The Arboretum is open from dawn to dusk, with refreshments available for purchase and activities from 10 AM to 4 PM."
We see Lilac Sunday as a wonderful excuse to get to the Arboretum each Spring. It's a perfect day for a dogwalk. Yes, the Arboretum is dog-friendly, as long as you use your leash and pick up all waste. Plus, the activities planned for this year are great.
Meet Meg Muckenhoupt author of "Boston's Gardens & Green Spaces"
Besides an array of family activities and entertainment, Muckenhoupt will be on hand to sign copies of, "Boston's Gardens & Green Spaces," and to talk about the places that inspired her new book. We can't wait to read it.
Guided Tours planned throughout the day
People watching on Lilac Sunday is one of the world's great spectator sports. Wander on your own for as long as you like. Or to learn more, join a guided tour of the Arboretum, the bonsai collection or the lilacs.
Dance & Music Performances
When you're ready to take a break from roaming the landscape, you can rest and enjoy music and dance. Performances will include: Morris Dancing, the "Art of Isadore Duncan," Silimbo D’Adeane West African Dance and Drum, Instrumental Funk and Groove with Jazzadelic, and Dixieland Jazz: Made in the Shade trio.
Here's a link to Meg's book in case you don't have Lilac Sunday on your schedule.
