Connie's Bakery- Provincetown MA

Perhaps it's good that Connie's Bakery has moved a bit farther out of town. She can do serious damage to my weight control efforts with her tempting treats.

The lemon meringue tart in the photo is her most dangerous creation. The shell is flaky, evenly browned and crispy despite being soaked with lemon.  As for the rest-- well you can see how perfect it is.

She also makes little free-form fruit tarts that are luscious and hard to resist.

Then there's the bread-- her french loaf is dense and full of flavor.

The bakery also has prepared foods, sandwiches, granola and other goodies.

Provincetown regulars may remember Connie's as the bakery that used to be located inside Clem and Ursies Fish Market. In 2007 it moved to it's own place, right off route 6 on Race Point Road.

It's located in a small shopping complex on the right, at the top of the hill as you leave route 6.  Go slow or you'll miss the driveway.

Provincetown Farmers' Market

We've been very happy to have a farmers' market in Provincetown for the past few years. Each Saturday, a small parking lot near Town Hall sprouts white tents and fresh goodies.

Our apartment rental begins on Saturday at 3 P.M., but each year we shop the market as soon as we arrive in town – even before we have a kitchen to stock with fruit and vegetables.

Today, we bought ground cherries, corn, lettuce and tomatoes from Silverbrook Farms. Doris Mills from Noquochoke Orchards supplied us with peaches, plums, nectarines and a luscious cantaloupe.

Our dining table now displays a lovely bouquet of hydrangeas from a vendor at the rear of the market, and our breadbox was filled at the Danish Pastry House stand.

A big thank you to Andy Pollock, of Silverbrook Farm in Dartmouth for organizing this market and bringing fresh, local produce to the residents and visitors of this community at lands end in Massachusetts.

Neo-Paws- Maggie's Sporty Beach Boot

Our Westie, Maggie Mae has been bopping around Provincetown in a sporty blue and green Neo-Paws beach boot.  (Yes, she has a sore paw but the boot is keeping it clean, and she doesn't have to wear a cone!)

Maggie and her boot have been a hot topic of conversation on the streets, along the beach and in the shops and restaurants. (Yes, you can bring your dog into many of the shops and some of the restaurants with patio-seating in Provincetown.)

In Boston, when the sidewalks are covered in salt, Maggie wears Neo-Paws winter boots on all four feet.

Bubala's Lobster Roll- Lobster Roll Chronicles

We've been going to Bubala's in Provincetown for years, and we go for two items-- the Steamers cooked in stout and the Lobster Roll.

Here the chef takes the traditional sauce used to steam mussels in white wine and substitutes stout for the wine, and steamers for the mussels. (I've copied this method many times at home with wonderful results.)

Yesterday this was our lunch stop. We happened to be running errands in our rental car when the hungries hit us. Bubula's is one of the few places in town with parking.

They also have a good size patio for people watching and some waterview tables inside, if that's what you crave.

Bubula's believes, as I do, that a lobster roll and a lobster salad roll are two different things. They show that belief on thier menu.

I had the Lobster Roll– sauteed with butter. Yesterday's version was prepped by a skillful hand. The lobster was buttery with an occasional crispy bit but not dry. The fries were seasoned and tasty. Proof of their goodness is that I ate more of them than I intended.

We dined at the bar with the locals. It's a good place to get a feel for the current tone of the town.

Even Stormy Days Are Beautiful

We did have a stormy afternoon on Monday in Provincetown. It can be exciting to watch a storm come in across the water and see the flashes of lightning arc from sky to sea.

Most of the line of squalls missed us and took aim at the towns across the bay.

After the storm we had the most beautiful cloud formations. This one was visible from the wharf, where we picked up a lobster dinner to take home and eat on the deck.

Cornmeal Blueberry Pancakes At Devon's in Provincetown

We're in Provincetown, MA and will be giving you some reports on what we love about this place. For example, the cornmeal blueberry pancakes at Devon's in the East End are worth the trip.

We've already had breakfast at Devon's twice in the three days we've been here. They make a perfect poached egg for Ed, and I'm addicted to their pancakes.

It's a tiny place with a few tables inside and a few more on the patio. Their breakfasts are among the best in town. And, after dark they turn up the charm and produce wonderful, white-tablecloth dinners with a touch of casual elegance.

More on dinner later--once we manage to land a reservation!
