No Mayo Lobster Roll from James Hook & Company

The lines at the Food Truck Throwdown today were way too long so we stopped by James Hook & Co. to grab a cup of chowder. I was looking longingly at the lobster rolls when one of the crew came up and asked if he could get something for me.

I said, "I'd love a lobster roll but I can't have mayo." He said, "Tell me how you'd like it and I'll make what you want." And, he did!

Ed and I each had a toasted bun filled with fresh, chilled lobster topped with just a drizzle of melted butter. Perfection!

This adds one more place where you can get a lobster roll without mayo. What you have is pure lobster pleasure. We'll continue the lobster roll hunt and keep reporting back to you.

Early Spring: Henry Thoreau and Climate Change at The Concord Museum

We have a double Friday Link, today. First is The Garden Club of the Back Bay's blog that keeps us informed about wonderful programs, events, and exhibitions.

This week, they pointed out "Early Spring: Henry Thoreau and Climate Change" which opens this weekend at The Concord Museum.

The Concord Museum Says:

"Early Spring: Henry Thoreau and Climate Change, a ground-breaking exhibition at the Concord Museum from April 12 through September 15, 2013, explores three centuries of careful observation of seasonal natural phenomena in Concord, a pool of data on the relationship between climate and biology that is essentially without parallel in North America. The exhibition also provides an extraordinary opportunity to examine the Concord Museum’s renowned Thoreau collection that includes the desk on which Thoreau wrote Walden, together with examples of his original field notes, journal recordings, seasonal charts, and botanical specimens. This material has never before been exhibited together."

Ross' Grill : A Long Time Provincetown Favorite

It's astonishing that we don't have at least ten posts on Ross' Grill in Provincetown. Lunches and dinners at this long-time favorite are one of the highlights of every visit to this town at land's end. 

But, like many of the places where we go to relax and where we avoid working, Ross' has been neglected except for the many times Penny has recommended it on Chowhound's Southern New England Board and Trip Advisor's Provincetown Forum.

If a visit to Provincetown is in your weekend or summer plans, here's what you need to know to be assured of a great meal.

  

Find Whaler's Wharf at 237 Commercial Street. Walk all the way through and go up to the second floor to find Ross' Grill. They do take reservations and we needed one even in mid-April. Our favorite seats are at the bar where we have been well cared for by some of the nicest bartenders anyone could imagine, over the years. 

Every time we think the food can't top our last visit, it does. This time, we were blown away by the perfect Pan-seared Gloucester Sea Scallops, Scallion Risotto cakes, Lemon Zabaglione and a creamy cod brandade.

And, be sure to check the blackboard of wine specials. The wine list here has been a source of new favorites for many years. We have a tradition of auditioning Thanksgiving wines and choosing one from this list. We share their taste in Pinot Noir.

Enjoy the great food that comes out of the tiny kitchen but try to save room for dessert. We were alerted that they had pies from their excessively talented pie lady. This time, it was strawberry rhubarb but, later in the season, it may be blueberry/peach. 

There's a great harbor view from the waterfront deck if you stop in for a drink or snack. And, if you have a housefull of guests, ask about the large table in the corner where we've seen so many happy gatherings of diners feasting on good food while enjoying good conversation and good friends. It's that kind of place!

YOU ARE HERE! New Map Center at the BPL

For months, you haven’t been able to see much beyond the yellow caution tape draped across  the stairway leading to the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library (BPL). But, that all changes today, as the doors swing wide at 11am for an opening ceremony.

We were given a sneak preview, earlier this week.

Beyond a 3-foot diameter world globe and intriguing 18th Century map of Boston at the front entrance, you’re greeted by a new exhibition area. It’s an impressive space with a high, slightly arched ceiling stretching over ever-changing displays. Here, the public will be able to see more of the Map Center's vast collection of maps and atlases.

While these historical treasures reflect the world from the 15th century to the present, particular attention is given to Boston, Massachusetts, and New England.

As a partnership between the BPL and Leventhal, the map center is meant for the enjoyment and education of all, including a Kids Map Club cleverly located in the main room’s window nooks.

Look for the atlas under glass. Each day the staff will turn to a new page. And, its "Virtual Atlas" counterpart, on the inteactive monitor in front, allows you to explore the entire volume.

The Map Center also supports a website that offering more than 3,600 digitized maps at maps.bpl.org.

This state-of-the-art space features new climate control storage for thousands of maps and atlases. Beyond the glass doors in the photo below is a research and teaching area that will be opened and staffed on a separate schedule, and a reading room for rare map research. 

You may visit the Map Center’s exhibition space whenever the Central Library in Copley Square is open. The current presentations feature Leventhal Map Center Treasures along with Unconventional Maps: Exploring the Stories of Cartographic Curiosities.

Autumn Color, one way or another....

There's more than one way to add autumn color to the Provincetown scene. In front of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) was this bright sculpure titled "I Was Once a Forest" by Frank Vasello. And, PAAM is our Friday link today! 

 

If you're planning a fall foray to the Outer Cape, add this fine art stop to your itinerary. Right now, the hours are, "October - May noon to 5 pm, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday also open by appointment."

PAAM's Mission is: "The objects and purposes of this association shall be to promote and cultivate the practice and appreciation of all branches of the fine arts, to assemble and maintain in the town of Provincetown and environs a collection of works of art of merit, to hold exhibitions, and by forums, concerts and similar activities to promote education of the public in the arts and social intercourse between artists and laymen. To these ends it shall operate strictly within its charter as a nonprofit, educational, artistic and cultural organization."

Provincetown in still a community of artists and PAAM is the artistic heartbeat of the town. Admission is just $7 and is free for PAAM members and on Friday evenings. The sculpture garden surrounding the museum is always open and always free.

PB Boulangerie In Wellfleet Is Worth the Trip

PB Boulangerie Bistro is one of those places you should stop everytime you happen to cross its path. It's even a place you should go a few miles out of your way to get some extraordinary French bakery items, like perfect croissants.

As with any coastal business, check the hours before you begin your trip. They reduce their hours in the off-season. The big advantage of going this time of year is that you won't have to wait in the long lines that form during the height of summer. 

Ed, who will usually take any opportunity to enjoy some good preserves, said this croissant was so good he wanted to savor the flavor without any additions.

On our way back from Provincetown, we stopped and filled a big shopping bag with a baguette, a farmer's loaf, and a multi-grain loaf, wonderful chococlate chunk and bike trail cookies.

And, a few treats from this exceptional source make a great "thank you" for anyone who watered your plants, took in your mail, or is just a great friend.

Crispy Cauliflower, a Perfect Snack!

Who knew, that after a couple of visits to The Dining Car food truck, you could develop cravings for cauliflower?  

Dining Car chefs, David Harnik and Naomi Close coat the flowerettes in a light corn meal batter, quick fry them, and decorate with a great sauce. (We did without the sauce, because of an allergy, but still enjoyed every bite.)

The process intensifies and sweetens the vegetable in the same way roasting does. And, this team manages to deliver them from the fryer without the grease. Instead, you get a light, crisp, dry crunch.

We saw customer after customer enjoying a basket of cauliflower as an afternoon snack.

It also makes a great alternative to french fries with one of their pulled pork sandwiches.
