Last week, we stopped into Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown during our Hurricane Irene shopping spree in the Middle Eastern Markets on Mount Auburn Street. I admit that I crave a diner visit from time to time.
There is nothing like a Hot Turkey Sandwich to take me back to my childhood. I remember spending many happy hours with my Dad in a collection of Rhode Island diners owned by his friends and customers.
I was allowed to spin on the stools, grill my own English muffins and cheese sandwiches, and mix my own milk shakes with an occasional lift to make up for my pre-adult stature. The hot turkey was one of those plates I would share with my Dad. I'd order, in my most grown up voice, but he'd eat most of it.
Ed had a diner-deprived childhood. Of course, he had a mother who cooked great Italian food at home. However, it's hard for him to see diner food as comfort food.
Lately, he's been on a pulled-pork streak, so he went with that option, served as a plate with beans, cole slaw, and cornbread.
There was neighborhood chatter around the corner of the counter.
Good neon inside and out!
And, even downhome advice on parking in the area.
The bottom suggestiona are..
or parachute over the Charles River
with a gentle southeast wind blowing
(line up on the Stadium & wear your rubbers)
or whatever... just don't get tagged, it'll spoil your whole meal.
Do you have memories of a childhood diner? Which one? Where was it? What did you eat?
I think diners are making a comeback and know that I'm not the only one who loves them. Amazon has a wide selection of "Diner Goods" from cookbooks, to photography, to games!
