What would fall be without a Pumpkin Pie? Well, it would still be fall, and you might actually like another type of squash pie even better! Wait, I speak not heresy.
I never thought much about it, until Penny uncovered the “shocking” truth. She recently asked Josh Deane of Sienna Farms to suggest a great pumpkin for pies.
While the standard sugar pumpkin makes a great base for pies, he thinks butternut squash has more of a creamy flavor on its own. But, Deane’s top choice to make a “pumpkin pie” would be a blue Hubbard squash.
While farmers’ markets are taking orders, you might also consider the “Pie in the Sky” fund raising event for Community Servings. One pie at $25 translates into a week of free home-delivered meals for a critically ill person. And, you get a Thanksgiving pie provided by some of Greater Boston's best chefs, bakers, and caterers.
Let us know if you have a favorite “squash” to make "pumpkin pie." We’re open to suggestions.
