Pop a cork! It's February 1st.
We're staying true to our "Toast with a glass of sparkling wine on the first of every month," resolution. Later this evening, we'll release the bubbles from a bottle of Carpene Malvolti Prosecco.
This is the first prosecco I can recall trying. That was back in the early 90s, when we were still learning about the varietal. And, it's one we still find ourselves going back to, all these years later.
Prosecco is light, fun and unpretentious. In Italy it's often served at the beginning of a meal, but we think it works just about anytime of the day or night.
It's a perfect take along sparkler for picnics, up on the roof or when asked to dine at a neighbor's home. Most everyone will applaud your selection. I remember a friend from our Narragansett Bay sailing days who didn't like Champagne, so we always served him prosecco, and he loved it.
As wine expert Michael Apstein puts it, "Champagne is yeasty and serious. Prosecco is fresh, fruity and flippant."
So, as we str-u-g-g-l-e to keep our New Year's resolution, here's to an abbreviated, but promising month.
Salute!
