For the last few weeks Boston Organics has been tucking a box of Kiwi Berries along side the regular Kiwi fruit in our order.
This gave us a chance to taste-test one against the other. The flavor is very similar. One of the growers working with Boston Organics is Kiwi Korners in Danville, PA. Farmer Dave Jackson recommends waiting until the berry is slightly wrinkled and fully ripe before enjoying or refrigerating it.
Kiwis and Kiwi Berries are related- they're cousins, members of the same genus, Actinidia arguta. The berry is sometimes called a Hardy Kiwi and is growing in popularitiy. It doesn't have a fuzzy skin. You don't have to peel it. And, the seeds are tiny.
The nutrition delivered by both Kiwis and Kiwi Berries is outstanding. Kiwi Korners' Nutrition page says they contain:
"Vitamin C - five times the Vitamin C of an orange
Vitamin E - twice that of an avocado with only 60% of the calories
Vitamin A - Essential in vision, normal bone, tooth development, reproduction, and the health of skin
Vitamin B6 - equals the amount of a serving of spinach
Vitamin B2 - the same amount as found in 100% fortified breakfast cereal"
We're nearing the end of the season, so grab a box if you see one and try this "popable" version of the Kiwi.
For people who live in a tiny Boston condo, we have a big selection of books on food. But, more and more the books we invite to come and live with us are reference books like this one on Vegetabes. Herbs and Fruit. It could make a great gift for your favorite cook or food lover.
