Recently, we spent a couple of hours at the Boston Speed Dog truck in Newmarket Square, preparing a feature on Speed's for Serious Eats. Click here to read that report and comments on Speed Dogs from around the country.
We had a great time interviewing regulars who came out for lunch on a beautiful day. We discovered (and haven't stopped thinking about) the new Speed's Grilled Pastrami sandwich. (Here's our report on that tempting item- in case you missed it.)
And, we were able to watch and photograph the Speed's magic as it happened from inside the truck.
One of our favorite interviews was with the man in this photo below. When he learned we were covering Speeds for Serious Eats, he declined to give his name but said, "These are serious dogs, and I speak for everyman." Our conversation with him revealed a well-informed Boston food lover with a wide-ranging palate and a nose for great eats around the area.
Before we left, Chef Greg Gale introduced us to Jack Epstein from Boston Brisket Company. (photo of the two of them below.) We said, "thank you" from all the Speed Dog fans for providing a new location for the Speed's truck in his parking lot. We congratulated him on the quality of the meat products he represents. The pastrami on the new sandwich is his. And, while the custom Speed Dog is made in Connecticut, Chef Greg buys it from Boston Brisket.
Here's a good book for finding more places like Speed's. We'll be pointing out great gift ideas for different type of people in the months ahead. Here's one for adventure-loving food folks.
