The Prudential Center Farmers' Market was the subject of my "Market Scene" report over on Serious Eats this week. Click here for that report.
In preparing that report I spend some time with Greg Bodine from Drumlin Farm. Some readers will remember Greg from a couple of seasons as the Manager of the Copley and Central Square Farmers' Markets. Now, he's an apprentice farmer at Drumlin.
This farm in Lincoln, is a Mass Audubon sanctuary. In keeping with the organizations mission, they do all they can to set an example for sustainable agriculture. And, to insure that future farmers, like Greg, have an opportunity to learn how to farm this way, they have set up the apprenticeship program.
Jason Dragon works at Drumlin and says, "It's a wonderful place to be!" He is holding up one of the BioBags they offer for sale on their stand. These bags are 100% compostable, 100% polyethylene and GMO free and 100% biodegradable. They're made from corn and are part of Drumlin's effort to reduce the use of plastic and encourage shoppers to bring their own reusable bags.
I not only bring bags, I bring containers to put my berries, cherry tomatoes, plums, or ground cherries. It let me leave the baskets for the farmer to reuse and my fruit arrives home in perfect condition.
Drumlin farm is just 23 miles from the Prudential Center and is a perfect destination for a day out of the city. They have a full program of activities, and events for all ages.
