Here's a run-down of what is open in Boston on Patriots' Day and the MBTA schedules for - April 20, 2009

This is a Massachusetts State Holiday Only.
Restaurants, bars: Open
Convenience stores: Open
Supermarkets: Open
Retail stores: Are allowed to open if the owners choose
Liquor stores: Open
City, Town, State Operation in MA are closed: This includes Schools, Libraries. Only emergency services are available.
Federal offices and facilities are open: This includes the Postal Service
Financial Services: Banks may open if they wish. All markets are open.
Boston Parking: You don't have to feed the meters. Other parking rules apply. Many streets will be cleared of Parked cars to accommodate the Boston Marathon.

Boston Trash Collection: The announcement from Public Works covers Monday April 20, 2009
Regular pick up: Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Chinatown, Fort Hill, Financial/Leather, North End, Roxbury/Mission Hill, South Boston, and South End.
The following areas delayed one day: Allston/Brighton, Dorchester, East Boston, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale, West Roxbury, and parts of Jamaica Plain where trash is collected once a week.
And finally, sections of Jamaica Plain that have trash collection 2 times per week will have no delay, regular trash & recycling schedule. If your trash & recycling is collected one day a week in Jamaica Plain, trash and recycling is delayed a day

Marathon Monday

Blue, Orange, Red and Green line service will operate on its regular weekday schedule with extra service before and after the marathon.

Commuter rail trains will operate on its regular weekday schedule.

All buses and trackless trolleys will operate on a Saturday schedule.

Commuter Boat and Inner Harbor Ferry service will operate on a regular weekday service schedule.

THE RIDE will operate on a modified weekday schedule.

Copley Station will be closed all day. Customers attending the Boston Marathon will have access to the Green Line at Hynes Convention Center or Arlington Stations.

Route 55 – Queensbury/Copley Station ~ Entire service terminated until completion of Marathon.

The Green Line’s Woodland Station along Route 16 in Newton will be closed to automobile traffic between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The station will remain open for customer use.

On the Green Line - the Arlington Station entrance located on Berkeley Street, and both entrances of Hynes Station will remain open Marathon Monday to accommodate Marathon attendees.

Customer Service Van will be on Boylston Street at the rear of Hynes Station selling prepaid $5:00 Charlie Cards.

On Marathon Monday, some buses will be rerouted at certain times during the day to prevent disruption of the race.
From the MBTA site "Bikes are not allowed on any trains on New Year's Eve, Patriots Day or the 4th of July."
