Somerville's own Taza Chocolate has added an exciting new flavor to its line of Mexican style chocolates. It's a disc of carefully selected, locally roasted, stone ground, organic chocolate enhanced with Guajillo Chili.
Taza says:
"The combination of chili and chocolate is not a new idea. The two have been enjoyed together as a drink for thousands of years by the native cultures of Central and South America. Guajillo Chili in particular is one of the most popular chilis in Mexican cooking. Its bright, floral, berry flavors and approachable heat make it the perfect match for our distinctive cacao."
If you've learned to love the combination of chili and chocolate, as I have, you should get over to the Whole Foods on River Street in Cambridge this afternoon. They're expecting the folks from Taza to be there demonstrating how to make great drinking chocolate and offering tastes.
On a cold winter evening, the only thing better than a great mug of hot chocolate is a great mug of perfectly prepared drinking chocolate with a spicy undertone. Why should I try to find the words when Taza has already found them? They tell you to:
"Expect a slow burn beginning a full ten seconds after you first bite into it. The heat starts at the back of the palette and moves down to the throat with a very pleasant warmth."
When the chocolate is warm and liquid, that pleasant heat makes it all the way to your chilly toes.
