Any trip to Brookline is a great excuse to pick up sandwiches at our favorite deli- Michael's on Harvard Street.
A while ago we asked Michael which was his favorite sandwich. He was quick to reply, "brisket." This trip I decided to try the beef brisket. Michael recommends you have it on a roll with horseradish sauce.
Of course, I wouldn't leave without a corned beef on rye, and I knew that Ed would want a "Thanksgiving" –Turkey Breast, Stuffing, and Cranberry Sauce on Toasted White Bread.
The three sandwiches were lined up for a taste-off. Nibbles were taken, flavors compared, and rankings made. (Pickles were used to clear our palates.)
We have two winners! I chose my perfect corned beef on seeded rye with just a smidge of mustard. Ed finished off the Thanksgiving, declared it his favorite, and then decided to have the rest of the corned beef for dessert.
While our old favorites won, we both enjoyed the brisket. It has a warm, homemade, "Granny was in the back cookin' all day" flavor, that you often find in a good pot roast.
One bit of news on Michael's- they are no longer taking credit cards so stop at the ATM before your visit.
