Saturn Peaches or Donut Peaches or ...

They have many names, these tiny, flat peaches that seem to have compressed all the flavor and sweetness of a peach twice their size into their softly fuzzed skin.
Img_5904_version_2
I found the perfect description of them at
http://www.harvestwizard.com/2008/05/doughnut_peach.html

"A peach that is juicy and sweet—many say the best tasting of all peaches—and creamy with a pit that does not cling wrapped in a nearly fuzzless skin: I want that peach!"

The author also lists the names this delight goes by: donut peach, peento peach, Chinese flat peach, saucer peach, and Saturn peach.

Keown Orchards at the Copley Square Farmers' Market has had them for the past week, and we love them. This farm is also at a number of other markets in the area.

We all know that the season for perfect stone fruit is very short in our region so please, for your own sake, get out to an orchard, farm stand or farmers' market and pick up a peck of these sweet gems to enjoy while you can.

(While our miniature basket in the photo could make you think these are giants, they are actually 2 - 3 inches in diameter. You can eat a mess of them in one sitting.)
